Established in 2010, our Youth Climbing Academy is a developmental climbing program for youth aged 4 to17 built around two fundamental benefits of sport: FUN and FITNESS. Whether students continue on as recreational climbers or go on to become world-class competitive athletes, we believe that climbing in any form contributes to happier, healthy living.

Youth Climbing @Climber's Rock

Our Youth Bolder Lab has over 1,000 sq. ft. of youth-only bouldering walls, separate bathrooms/changerooms, and side entrance available for drop off and pick up.

Our Top Rope Alley is tucked away (next to the main gym) and features top rope and autobelay routes for a wide range of climbers.

Academy Focus (Ages 9 to 13)

Academy Focus is designed for climbers who are ready to take the next step towards competition climbing, coaching, or route setting. Focus classes are for students who wish to pursue a spot on one of our competitive teams, or become a youth climbing coach or learn more about what route setting is all about.

Participants will expand their climbing vocabulary repertoire, while staying engaged in age-appropriate climbing games and activities. As they gain experience, participants are supported by their coaches in a more self-directed curriculum, building skills of initiative and taking ownership for their learning. Climbers will stay engaged with new and classic climbing games and exercises.

Students who show signs of the dedication, focus, and a self-driven attitude required to become a top-level climber may also participate in more advanced, regimented practices. They receive a higher level of coaching feedback including specific movements and techniques, as well as an introduction to the world of competition climbing which focuses on efficiency, accuracy, and mental preparation.

Academy Focus runs from Sept to June and includes two 120-minute classes each week.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

My child has never climbed before - can I sign them up?

Absolutely! Our classes cater to climbers of all skill levels - from absolute beginner to seasoned crusher. Climbing is inherently individual - that means even during our awesome group activities, the level of challenge being offered can be tailored to each individual climber in a class. We have specifically designed our program that way to be beneficial to everyone from first time enrolees to repeat registrants.

Which class should my child attend?

If your child is new to our program, we will recommend a class based on their past experience and availability. Once your child has participated in class and met our coaches, we can recommend future classes based on each individual's skills and interests. Our coaches ensure every climber is challenged and has opportunity of achieving improvement.

What should my climber wear to classes?

We recommend wearing light layers (the gym is kept cool, but climbing warms you up quickly) and don't forget socks and a water bottle! If your child does not have their own climbing gear (climbing shoes, harness, chalk bag) you can arrange to rent gear from us (until they decide the sport is something they really enjoy and want to get their own). Feel free to contact us if you need any information or climbing gear recommendations.

What will my child learn in class?

Rock climbing is a fun, healthy exercise and a great way to meet new friends. There are risks involved with rock climbing and participants are required to abide by strict rules when visiting any indoor rock climbing gym.

An indoor climbing gym is not the same as an indoor playground. Due to the nature of the sport, the risk of falling and getting injured must be taken seriously by everyone inside a climbing facility.

Indoor rock climbing is safe when all participants are knowledgeable and remain alert. Youth programs at Climber's Rock are designed to introduce the sport of rock climbing to new participants and teach them how to enjoy the sport safely.

Academy lessons at Climber's Rock are taught in a separate youth climbing space. Before youth climbers have access to the main climbing gym, they will learn and practice safe climbing techniques and must demonstrate their understanding of gym rules and etiquette.

Can my child and our family climb outside of scheduled classes?

Yes! All parents are strongly encouraged to sign up for our Top Rope Belay lesson (no climbing required). The lesson focuses on safe practices used in rock climbing and will teach you how to work the ropes for your child (or children) and enjoy the sport together.

Important: To help avoid climbing accidents, collisions, and injuries, climbers under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times when NOT participating in scheduled Academy lessons.

During Academy classes, we ask that parents do NOT remain in the lesson area to watch. Our Academy coaches are well-trained and adept at working with kids of all ages. Over many years of operation, we have found children focus best on learning when it's just them and the coaches. Our coaches receive better responses from the kids and build trust faster when parents are not hovering nearby. Kids pay attention, develop independence and confidence, and get more accomplished during lesson time - all great benefits attributed to the sport of climbing.
